Describe your background and what led you to pursue a career in dentistry
Growing up with my grandmother in Hong Kong, I often saw her struggle to eat with dentures, which sparked my curiosity in dentistry. As I got older and became conscious of smiling due to crooked teeth, I visited the dentist and had teeth removed for braces.
At first I was really anxious at the dentist, but over time I was able to overcome the nerves and gain confidence from the corrected smile. Having experienced these first hand was what made me want to pursue a career in dentistry, and determined to change people’s negative perception on visiting the dentist.
What do you enjoy most about being a dentist?
Being able to meet and help people from all walks of life, especially those who have dental anxiety like I did before.
Is there a particular area of dentistry you’re especially interested in?
Yes, I have a strong interest in cosmetic and restorative dentistry. I’m drawn to how these areas blend science with artistry, allowing me to restore function while also enhancing a patient’s appearance and self-esteem.
There’s nothing quite like seeing a patient look in the mirror after treatment and smile with genuine confidence. Those moments never get old.
Is there a particular area of dentistry in which you have a keen interest in? Tell us a bit about it.
Restorative dentistry and oral surgery are my two main fields of interest in dentistry at the moment. Being able to build teeth up to improve daily function and aesthetics is a nice mixture of science and art that always fascinates me. In situations where teeth are beyond repair, the ability to remove them and get someone out of pain and discomfort that way is also very rewarding.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I love jamming with friends on the keyboard and exploring different music. I also enjoy learning different languages to understand others better.
What advice do you have for people who’ve been putting off booking a dental appointment (e.g., due to nerves, fear of complex treatment etc.)
Don’t be afraid to take the first step in looking after your smile. Every smile deserves to be beautiful and has the potential to heal others too.
