What does an orthodontist do?
An orthodontist is a type of dentist who specialises in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The word “orthodontics” comes from the Greek words “orthos,” meaning “straight or proper,” and “dontos,” meaning “teeth.” An orthodontist uses braces, retainers, and other appliances to align teeth and jaws to improve a person’s smile and oral health. This means that if you have dental or facial irregularities such as crooked, crowded, or protruding teeth; an incorrect bite; or jaw misalignment, you may need to see an orthodontist for treatment.
A teeth straightening treatment can improve the appearance of your teeth and how well they work. It can also boost your self-esteem and self-confidence, which is why orthodontic treatment is often considered a “cosmetic” procedure such as teeth whitening. However, straightening your teeth is not just about looks; it can also improve your oral health. For example, if you have teeth that are crowded or crooked, they may be more difficult to clean, which could lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Straightening your teeth can also help to reduce wear and tear, as well as prevent injuries to your lips and cheeks.
The difference between orthodontics and orthopaedics
Orthopaedics is bone development and jaw alignment whereas orthodontics is more tooth alignment. Early interceptive orthopaedics (from ages 5-9yo) can help with growth guidance of the facial development and promote better facial beauty, symmetry and health through retraining of the oral facial muscles, breathing and myofunctional habits using the Myobrace systems.
Which teeth straightening treatment is best for me?
After an initial assessment, an orthodontist will usually recommend treatment options based on the severity of your dental or facial irregularities. For milder cases, treatments such as dental bonding or clear aligners (eg Invisalign aligners) may be recommended. For more severe cases, treatments such as metal dental braces, lingual braces, or jaw surgery may be necessary.
The type of treatment plan you receive will also depend on your age. For example, younger patients may be treated with “phase one” orthodontics, which are designed to correct problems early, before they become more severe. This can help to improve the long-term results of treatment and reduce the need for more traditional braces or invasive procedures later on.
The best time to start orthodontic treatment is as soon as possible. A confident smile will always be in style!
